Livvy Severson 10/31/2024 1:03 PMThe mindful eating action has been a great meditative practice and I've noticed that I feel a bit less stressed overall in my day to day. It's been nice to slow down my meals and daily routine routine by eating with no distractions, especially since I was able to eat most of these meals outside. I think I'll definitely keep up the practice of having at least one meal a day with no distractions. I this action also inspired me to cook more of my meals and I hope to work my way up to being zero-waste in the kitchen. -
Livvy Severson 10/30/2024 3:14 PMI joined the challenge for a class project, but I also wanted to explore the different types of ways I can be more environmentally conscious and shift my daily habits. I chose the exploration actions because I love to hike and experience the natural world, especially since I had just moved to a new area. I chose the mindful eating practice because I feel like I distract myself too much and I wanted to challenge myself to stick to a new habit/routine. -
Livvy Severson 10/29/2024 9:20 PMIt's interesting to notice my habits shift because of this daily practice. I've noticed that since I've been practicing mindful eating, I'm on my phone much less before I go to bed and throughout the day. It's slight, but I have definitely felt a change and don't check my phone as much throughout the day. This practice has also helped me to appreciate movies and TV more when it's not used as a background for my meal. -
Livvy Severson 10/22/2024 10:32 AMI've been really enjoying eating my meals outside with no distractions. It's nice to notice new things about my backyard or go to the beach to eat a meal and enjoy the noise of the waves. I like how this challenge is brining me outside more on a daily basis. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseMindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?
Livvy Severson 10/16/2024 1:08 PMI think what I notice most about the difference with mindful eating is the sense of taste is of course used much more than in a normal mindfulness practice. I feel like I'm able to enjoy my meals more because I can detect each individual ingredient better, while also admiring how well they blend together. I was not much of a foodie person before the start of this practice, but that is definitely changing a bit now. -
Livvy Severson 10/14/2024 5:10 PMIt's been a little weird getting used to eating in silence, but there is also something meditative about it. I feel like I eat slower without any distractions. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered SinksWhat coastal site did you visit and what did you learn while there?
Livvy Severson 10/14/2024 5:08 PMI visited the coastal area along Perkins Park by Lover's Point in Pacific Grove and spent a lot of time observing the wildlife. I'm always so curious about the squirrels that live in coastal areas. Something I learned is that since this area is within the Monterey Marine Sanctuary, fish in the area have been shown to grow in size in recent years. I think I also just came to the realization that the ocean water is so clean and clear because it is federally protected. Will definitely be back. -
Livvy Severson 10/14/2024 4:56 PMI often eat outside when I'm doing the mindful eating challenge and I've started to really enjoy that part of my day. It's interesting to realize how I am always distracted while I'm eating. I feel like this practice has also made me put more thought into what I am eating and how it makes me feel. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand SinksHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?
Livvy Severson 10/11/2024 12:08 PMSpending time outdoors helps me feel connected to the planet and my surrounding environments. It heightens my curiosity and sense of awe. I'm always gently touching, smelling, looking, and listening. I feel like spending time outdoors allows me to feel more connected to myself and my body. I could never be bored while spending time in nature.
