SiA Homework for Sept 4 - PRACTICE POST
Write an Ecochallenge POST to our team, briefly stating how you currently commute to Vanier. In Quebec, because we have a lot of hydro electric power, one of the main source of carbon emissions is from transportation. What commuting options do you have that would be healthier for you and the planet? Will you be considering any changes for this semester? If so, select or create an EcoChallenge action. If not, explain what your particular challenges are and what you could do to help other people in your situation (e.g. organise car sharing, propose a bus shuttle, etc.)

SiA Homework for Sept 4 - PRACTICE POST
On Sept 4, we will have 3 guests come talk to us about sustainability initiatives at Vanier. In preparation, please read over VANIER'S 5-YEAR SUSTAINABILITY ACTION PLAN 2018-2023 and then write an EcoChallenge post that includes the following: - What do you think about the plan? Is it ambitious enough? Is there anything missing or superfluous? From your own observation and experience, how well is Vanier doing? List some questions that you would like to ask our speakers regarding Sustainability at Vanier? - Identify at least 3 initiatives that you are potentially interested in contributing to this semester and explain why. (Note there is a column labelled student involvement.) For more detailed information, you can also consult the 2020 VANIER ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT in the links.

I will start a compost or worm bin where I live.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Smaller Portions
Reduced Food Waste
I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.
Land Sinks
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 10 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Transportation
Use Public Transit
Public Transit
I will use public transit 70 miles per day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
Reduced Food Waste
I will spend at least 10 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.

READ Quebec's principles for a just transition AND/OR PARTICIPATE in the Sept 27 Climate March
For the week of Sept 25 to Oct 2, please read the documents attached AND IF YOU CAN, please attend the Sept 27 Climate March. Many people and organisations feel that the government is dragging its feet on the important changes required to meet our climate commitments. For your post, reflect on the value of mass demonstrations. Include a photo of a protest banner or slogan that you find effective (if you can't attend the event then find a photo on the web from other climate marches).
Transportation
Stay on the Ground
Telepresence, High-Speed Rail
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Transportation
Try Carpooling
Carpooling
I will commute by carpool 10 miles per day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Shaimaa Selmoune 11/12/2024 2:41 PMFinal Post:
I personally did not like documenting the ecochallnges, but I did like participating in making a change for myself and others. I think it made a bit of a difference because there is less food waste now. I involved my entire family and even my in-laws for these challenges just to make the most positive impact possible. I still and will continue these habits and remind everyone else to continue them too since they can and are only beneficial. I think a world without fossil fuels will be hard since we rely on them for so many things, so the positive side of the coin is the impact it will make for the planet but the negative side of the coin is that many things will be harder to manage and/or do such as driving and heating things up quick. -
Shaimaa Selmoune 11/12/2024 2:35 PMImpact of refrigerants
First of all, what even is a refrigerant? A refrigerant is a chemical substance that is used in refrigerators and air conditioning systems. It is used for the cooling feature of the machines. It is unfortunately a colourless and odourless toxic gas. Refrigerants are considered to be a global warming potential and are destroyers of the ozone layer. The inhaling of a refrigerant is extremely dangerous and may lead to lung or brain damage. It is dangerous to the human and to the earth. -
Shaimaa Selmoune 11/12/2024 2:25 PMHybrid or Electrical Vehicles
According to Hydro-Quebec, completely electric cars do not produce emissions since they are powered by electricity only. However normal cars have huge emissions because of the gas used to power them. On the other hand, hybrid cars produce a medium/understandable amount of gas emissions since they are powered by gas and/or electricity. I’m working on getting my license soon so that when I move I can easily get from place to place. I’ve started looking around and searching for cars that would fit my liking/style and be environmentally friendly as well. There are many BMW’s, Hyundai’s and Volkswagon’s that I like that are also hybrid or electrical, so that will be my next purchase. -
Shaimaa Selmoune 11/12/2024 2:09 PMStay on the ground
I’ve learned that airplanes produce around 53.3lbs of carbon dioxide per mile on average. My husband and I live far away, he in Toronto and me in Montreal, therefore seeing each other would cost a lot, environmentally. Because of this, we decided to cut down on visits and use the train or the car when going to see each other. In the past few months we’ve avoided taking the plane approximately 6 times. We even opted for electric and hybrid cars to rent to decrease our carbon emissions. -
Shaimaa Selmoune 10/28/2024 9:36 AMExplore & Walk
Last week, I walked 6-7 km to explore and appreciate the nature around. I found many secret trails and species of plants and insects. I somehow came a skunk and a couple of deers. Those interactions made me aware of how many infrastructures there are in cities and how forgetful we can be of the nature we have. The walk was beautiful and the reminder was definitely needed.-
Shaimaa Selmoune 10/28/2024 9:38 AM^ this helped to clear my head and was quite a warmup for eventual hikes. It helped me physically and mentally.

Shaimaa Selmoune 10/28/2024 9:22 AMCompost
I have a compost bin at home, I’ve educated myself as well as my family about what we can and cannot put in the compost bin. We now compost in a more accurate way, avoiding bones, dairy products and whole eggs. The reason compost is so important is because it greatly reduces methane emissions from landfills. Since learning about food waste and compost, we have filled up around 6 compost bins. -
Shaimaa Selmoune 10/28/2024 8:54 AMI spent 10 minutes researching about ethical fashion and its effects. According to the world bank group, the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of the worldwide carbon footprint. Exports and imports are a huge part of the fashion carbon footprint, therefore local and natural resources/materials are more ethical and sustainable. Furthermore, fast fashion focuses on income, meaning quantity over quality, which also means more resources (ex: wool and water), materials, used to make cheap, short lasting clothing. -
Shaimaa Selmoune 10/23/2024 10:15 AM“THANKSGIVING”:
What I’ve learned from the 4 videos is that us as individuals have a lot of negative carbon footprint. So much that we alll together use too many of the earths resources, more than the earth itself (1.5 earths). Countries that are considered more developed have higher carbon prints than others. Additionally, rich people make have higher carbon prints than the average people. We take more resources than we need, which in turn produces more pressure, damage to our planet we should take care of instead of damaging, which is why degrowth is important. I’m grateful for the nature near my home, it allows me to be appreciative of the ecosystem that helps us. I’m grateful for the transit that allows me to keep my gas emissions at a minimum. I’m grateful for some of the walkable cities here and grateful for all the things I have that simplify my life. Degrowth could help my life by giving me a different perspective in life, focusing on quality, for me and for the earth instead of focusing on quantity and new things. -
Shaimaa Selmoune 10/23/2024 9:56 AMI have not thrown food away for the past 2 weeks. By doing this, I have greatly reduced the amount of greenhouse gas emitted, which is worse than carbon dioxide, according to my research. Less food waste means less rotting food in landfills, less methane produced. -
Shaimaa Selmoune 10/02/2024 9:51 AMI cooked a smaller portion of food, because it usually is too much and no one finishes it, by making less food, that also reduced the amount of food waste, which positively impacts the environment because less energy, water and other sources were used for the meal I prepared.
