Addy's actions
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Tend A Garden
Conservation Agriculture
I will tend to a garden, or prepare for one, each day using sustainable gardening practices.
Electricity
Communicating with ease
One action I've done 3 times now is to read a book on climate issues (latest, "Electrify" by Saul Griffiths) and summarize the book to my friends in 3 different social media groups. Sometimes these books are dry or perceived as being "too difficult" or just don't make it to the top of other people's lists, but they _are_ interested in knowing more. A summary of the chapters, one by one or 3 at once, thru the end of the book, is helpful to get the word out.
Health and Education
Fund Family Planning
Family Planning and Education
I will donate to supply a community with reproductive health supplies.
Electricity
Solar Water Consultation
Solar Hot Water
I will contact a local installer/distributor to see if a solar water heater makes sense for my house.
Health and Education
Preparing not very cheerfully
I have consulted with my daughter about preparing my granddaughter for the hateful administration in which she will grow to adulthood. I am gifting her, my daughter, my nieces with self defense classes, bear spray, and Plan B.
Health and Education
Connect With A Nonprofit
Family Planning and Education
I will connect with a local nonprofit working on issues affecting women, girls, trans people, and/or nonbinary people in my community, and find out how I can get involved or become a member.
Buildings
Plan to Insulate
Insulation
I will spend 30 minutes finding out how to make my home more energy efficient through better insulation and weatherization.
Electricity
Advocate for Solar Installation
Distributed Solar Photovoltaics
I will create a plan to and advocate for solar installation at my business, apartment building, or campus.
Health and Education
Support Businesses Owned by Women, POC, or Immigrants
Sustainable Intensification for Smallholders
I will spend 120 minutes researching and shopping from 10 businesses owned by women, people of color, or immigrants.
Health and Education
Sharing California's foresight
California has used it's market size within the U.S. to the benefit of many other states, notably with it's smog curbing regulations late in the last century, that force Detroit to produce cleaner car engines. It's come forward with Climate plans as well, and now with anti-plastic packaging plans. I'm posting to my frequently-skeptical Next Door groups to spread the word.
Buildings
Laundry to landscape!
Until I can get the actual plumbing put in next spring, I will double-use water in my home/garden. collecting from showers and other running water applications for use in the houseplants and outdoor garden.
Transportation
Express My Support For Walkable Cities
Walkable Cities
I will find out who in my city makes decisions that impact neighborhood walkability and express my support for better walking infrastructure.
Transportation
Advocate For Greener Vehicles
Electric Cars, Hybrid Cars, Efficient Trucks
I will assess the vehicles used by my company or college and advocate for a purchasing policy focused on electric and fuel-efficient vehicles.
Buildings
Research Retrofitting Incentives
Building Retrofitting
I will spend at least 60 minutes finding out if my city, region, state, or country offers incentives for retrofitting existing buildings.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Animal Products
Plant-Rich Diets
I will enjoy 3 meatless or vegan meals each day of the challenge.

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Backyard Chickens
I raise backyard chickens for eggs, so the eggs are local, fresh, and organic. The chickens are happy, live naturally, and eat various kitchen "waste" that really isn't waste at all. Win win!
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
Farm Irrigation Efficiency
I will prevent water runoff and increase absorbency by mulching the base of trees and plants in my yard.
Land Sinks
Buy Bamboo
Bamboo Production
When they are available, I will purchase products made from bamboo instead of wood, plastic, or metal.
Land Sinks
Plant Trees
Temperate Forest Restoration
I will plant 4 trees in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Electricity
Spreading Rooftop Solar to the next generation
My generation is the one that helped create a lot of the problems, so some of the solution logically rests with me. I have not only solarized my current house, but also my former house, my rental, and my daughter's house. With the Inflation Reduction Act, one can spread one's climate solutions further than ever before. The "one time" action can happen a lot more than one time!!

Addy Davidson 12/19/2024 6:37 AMAnother recycle moment! A year ago, we wound up taking out a damaged walkway that contained bricks, which were bound for the landfill. Then, realized that the culvert at the bottom of our road often fills up with plants, debris and dirt. Hubby wanted to get large gravel to put in there to stabilize the stream bed (with weedstop to discourage plants). Ahah! Bricks 'laid' in the bottom of that culvert will help water channel thru more easily (less likely to catch dirt and debris), discourages plants, and makes use of the old brick! -
Addy Davidson 12/06/2024 9:16 AMSunny, sunny days. I'm generating electricity like mad, which is unusual in December. So my cars, my house battery and the grid are happy, but my plants are thinking, "Uh oh, where's the rain?" Tradeoffs. -
Addy Davidson 12/05/2024 9:47 AMGoing after the gophers again. Darn it! They've poked a bunch of holes in my grass/goose fodder. -
Addy Davidson 12/03/2024 10:18 AMToday, shared on Next Door, the news of California's SB 54, a bill that will require product sellers to 1. reduce plastic packaging by 25%, 2. make all single-use plastic packaging recyclable, and 3. recycle 65% of that plastic packaging, by 2032. This is going to spread beyond California (what widget maker really wants to set up two different streams of packaging?) so once again, an action of California that benefits other states. Our Next Door is very down on government, so I post occasionally with these good news stories. We don't need a barrage of bad news to be constantly beating the drum. -
Addy Davidson 11/26/2024 9:34 AMLong Next-Door thread about the California Air Resources Board actions over the last 50 years. The actions in California were models for Germany and France, spread thru Europe, as well as helping (through the power of the California Marketplace to force change on Detroit) all of the U.S. to cleaner air. We aren't done yet, but man, there were some forward thinking political folks back then. Everybody complains about politics and government, but there are plenty of examples where enormous gains have been made. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and EducationWhen family planning focuses on healthcare provision and meeting the expressed needs of women, it results in empowerment, equality, and well-being, and the benefits to the planet are side effects. Why is family planning an important civil rights consideration?

Addy Davidson 11/24/2024 8:26 AMWe bought an EV yesterday. "Ruby". We already had a Volt, so now we have to figure out the small differences between a gas car (the truck we use for very occasional heavy jobs. Old, no power steering, 4 on the floor), the Volt, which is a platypus, and the new EV which reminds you about lines in the road, and cars passing you. Hard to drive "automatically" with many different platforms, but we'll get there. All as we are driving less and less. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityHow does advocating for rooftop solar connect to your values? How might you be able to get others involved in advocating for the shift to clean energy?
Addy Davidson 11/21/2024 8:19 AMStill trying to make a little headway with folks on Next Door. It's quite true that solar panels are expensive. It's also true that PG&E is trying it's best to kill solar installations. But none the less, we live in the land of sunshine. Come on folks!! -
Addy Davidson 11/17/2024 9:09 AMThe garden is never done. I actually have two more specific gardens to create, but I have to start over in Next Door when the time comes!

REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityDiversifying our energy supply and improving public health are just two benefits of renewable energy. What other motivators inspire you to consider installing a solar water heater in your home?
Addy Davidson 11/17/2024 9:05 AMI don't know that going "all electric" can be referred to as "diversifying my energy supply". But we didn't want gas of any kind up here in the country, so we ditched propane. Down in town, at the rental, we also ditched natural gas, and the renters have a heat pump water heater.
