It's very interesting learning about the differences between sell, use, and best by dates. I already knew that I could eat certain foods beyond the best-by date, as long as they don't exhibit signs of spoilage, but seeing that there isn't a universally accepted description is really surprising. Same with it not being a federally regulated thing, beyond baby formula.
I think if more people are aware of this, this can really help in reducing food waste. It is a fact that not only the meal is wasted, but every step of the process of getting food to that plate is wasted as well when it's not eaten. We should do our best to reduce that loss.
