On Sunday I bussed to the Walmart Supercenter in Marina to buy me a bottle of conditioner. I looked around and noticed the small swamp/lake next to the Marina library and wondered if it's struggling with water or is at a happy level of moisture to sustain the plants growing out of it and offering shade and housing to the animals that live in it. Another thing I noticed was when I was in Walmart; I wanted a thick conditioner that smelled fun but was as cheap as possible. I got one that was strawberry and $2.12, but I took a long time to make that decision because there were entire walls dedicated to shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hair oil, scalp care, and so much more. My bottle says it's of recyclable material as long as I empty the inside, but I wondered if needingthese many options was necessary; after all, less production of plastic is better than recycling it, in my eyes. This is not meant to deny access for unique hair cair needs, people who struggle to find products made for their hair type, or have allergies to common ingredients. My concern was how much bottles seemed to look like they fulfill the same effect and needs, yet there were so many brands and scents. I wondered how these walls of shower products would look if companies were less concerned with widening their customer reach and settling with perfecting their own niches. I think this would decrease their customer count and profits, but they would have a reliable group of customers to cater to, and also I wouldn't be crouched reading and smelling conditioner bottles getting in the way of the self check-out lanes

Suzanne Worcester 3/20/2024 4:59 PMI think you've touched on something perverse about our overconsumptive society. There are so many different options that it becomes bewildering. Massive stores with massive parking lots (a footprint larger than the entire park you mentioned, Locke Paddon park, next door. All of these choices generates waste and is unnecessary. For me, it keeps me from going shopping until I absolutely have too b/c it takes up so much time trying to figure out which choice to even buy. -

What were the subsidies, was I buying from a company that destroys ecosystems in another nation (likely), do they pay their workers enough (unlikely), and more questions.
